2007 Nest Data


Sunday, May 20th

Nest 1 was found just north of Red Drum South (POA 5) by Gary B. and Karen N. and was left in situ. Gary and his wife Kathy saw the turtle leaving the beach at ~06:45.
On June 15th the nest was flooded by a spring tide followed by a period of very heavy rains.

Inventoried 8/15 (0 dead hatchlings) 

 126  un-hatched eggs with no appreciable embryo development, many eggs in    the bottom half of the nest were blackened and soft indicating water immersion due in all probability by a rise in the water table.

Monday, May 21st

Nest 2 was found just to the north of POA 2 by Mary G. and Jackie E.  The nest had been depredated by raccoons and ghost crabs. 21 egg shells were found on the top of the nest. The remaining exposed eggs were re-buried an the nest was left in situ. On June 15th the nest was flooded by a spring tide an subsequently relocated to higher ground.

Tuesday, May 22nd

Nest 3 was found just to the south of POA 2 by Jean K.. and Janie L.  The nest was left in situ. This was another early morning turtle which they had the good fortune to see.
We received some great pictures of this old gal from Walt Plunkett, visiting  from Tucson AZ. which show evidence of an apparent shark bite or propeller strike to the right rear flipper but this didn't seem  to diminish her ability to dig a nest.

Wednesday, June 6th

Nest 4 was found to the south of POA 2 by Betsy K., Peggy B., and Micki M.  The nest was left in situ. Visiting was our friend Sylvia from London England shown here with her grandchildren. Sylvia is very active in the London bat protection program.

Friday, June 8th

Nest 5  Karen N. found this nest under the stairway of the second house north of POA 2.  With a bit of help from our friends, 119 eggs were relocated to higher ground next to Nest  4.

Friday, June 8th

Nest 6  was found by Martha and Dick B. to the south of POA 3.  The nest was left in situ on the forward slope of a dune.

Monday, June 18th

Nest 7 Betsy Koehler, Micki McCormick and Peggy Blake found this nest just south of the Beach Club and relocated 132 eggs several feet further back from the wash, which also gave the nest an additional 2' of elevation.

Friday, June 22nd

Nest 8 was found today 6/22/07 by Ben T., Jane T. and Karen N.
at the S. Red Drum area and due to the low area, 4 eggs were broken, 129 eggs were relocated to an area just south of POA 2. 
4 broken eggs - Visitors witnessed early morning turtle ~05:45 a.m.

Saturday, June 23rd

Nest 10 Martha B., Betsy K. and Dick B. found this nest south of POA 2 in the wrack line. 110 eggs were relocated further back from where it was found. Another early morning turtle but this time we got a picture of her and her human friends.

Nest 11 Karen N., Martha B., Betsy K. and Dick B. found this nest just south of POA 2. 137 eggs were relocated next to Nest 10.

Friday, July 13th

Nest 12  found by Karen N., Ben and Jane T. in a low lying area between POA  5 & 6. With a little help from our friends, 147 eggs were relocated by Ben and Jane T., Karen N., & Linda S. to a high and dry hummock opposite POA 5 (S. Red Drum).

Monday, July 16th

Nest 13  Betsy K. and Peggy B.  found this nest almost directly in front of POA 13 and left the nest in situ, as Mother did a good job of placing it above the wrack line.

Nest 14  Betsy K., Peggy B., and Tony N. found this nest in a low lying area almost directly in front of POA 5. With an assist from Steve Eyler the 138 eggs were relocated next to Nest 12.
