2011 Nest Data

Wednesday, May 4th from Cyndi White.

Nest 1 Fripp's first turtle of the season came last night-it's so early!! Hope it's a sign of a great season to come.
She laid her eggs just north of POA 4. We left the eggs "in situ". Janie Lackman, Robbie and Cyndi White worked on the nest. Janie brought down probes and all the supplies. The tracks were blown over and had disappeared in most places in the soft sand. There was a pile of sand left on the edge of a dune along with disturbed vegetation that helped us locate the nest. Cyndi found the eggs after probing. Cyndi

Note: Rob Foster from Valrico, FL first spotted the tracks and reported his find. Shortly afterward two of his houseguests, Hal & Barbara Tuttle from Sumter SC, returned to the nest & were very excited to take photos of the turtle patrol in action!

Friday, May 6th from Robbie White.

Nest 2 was found today at the far north end of the Island. The nest was up against the rocks and mama wasted no time; in & out pretty quick. Cyndi found the eggs and was assisted by Janie & I in relocating 147 eggs from nest to south of POA  2 in a higher location.
Renate spotted the tracks and you could tell she had found a nest by her excitement as we approached her. Rich Combes helped me retrieve the stakes & poles.
Another great morning on Fripp.

Nest 3 was found today between POA 3 & POA 4. Mama turtle tried several times to find the perfect spot and on the 3rd try she laid her eggs in a spot that did not need to be moved. The nest was found by Kelly Taylor, Kathy Agee, Sam Taylor, Alexandra Iriarte, and Megan Maule. Special thanks to Rich Combes who waved his magic wand (probe) and found the eggs. What a nice way to start the day.

Thursday, May 12th from Janie Lackman

Nest 4 was found this morning by Rick Keup and me south of POA#18. From the tracks, it appeared that we had just missed her exiting the beach. The ghost crabs had already been into the nest (claiming 3 eggs) so we used their clues and quickly located the eggs. 139 eggs were relocated to a dune in the same area with the help of Christina Tilton and Betsy Richards. Great TEAM effort!

Saturday, June 4th from Betsy Koehler

Nest 20 At access #22, there was a definite body pit, in front of and between the rocks, and the track differential showed she was on the beach a long time. We were sure we knew exactly where the nest was, but, sometimes it just takes longer to find. After a long time, we decided to just clear away the top 6-8 inches of sand and start over. Pat Rowell actually found the nest, it was just inside the IN tracks and one side of the nest was against a rock, and the bottom was on rock! We relocated 109 happy eggs to an area near POA access #19, just two were broken with probing. Martha and Dickie Blanchard, Pat Rowell and friend Erin (who is an aspiring Marine Biologist) and me, Betsy K.

Sunday, June 5th from Robbie White

Nest 21 found near POA 5 & we relocated 100 eggs to near POA 4. Janie & Robbie searched for 30 minutes or more when the south Team arrived to help & bring supplies. Within a few minutes and at the direction of Jean Kohlmayer as to where to probe, Rich found the eggs. I'm suggesting Rich become a specialist & only use his energies for finding the eggs & let the rest of us lug the supplies. Barb & Jean helped me with relocation while Rich walked down to assist the rest of the North Team as they searched for Nest 22.

Wednesday, June 22nd from Bob Freeman

Nest 39 Adjacent to Fripp Inlet Bridge on the Bay Side. Underscores the value of turtle education. It was discovered by three very observant visitors to Fripp, Gary, Meg and Tommy (photo), who were fishing under the bridge. They noted the incoming and outgoing tracks, identified a body pit, and called it in. Bob F. &Tony N. located the nest and left it "in situ" as it was more than 9 hours old and therefore, between handling and transporting the eggs, subject to movement induced mortality. It will most likely be relocated after the two week incubation period.

Showed no signs of hatching
Lost due to storm surge of 8/26

Friday, June 24th from Cyndi White

Nest 40 POA 2 left "in situ". We followed all the tracks, then continued on our walk, thinking there was not a nest. One turtle came in near the rock wall, went in and out of the tidal pool twice, went next to the dunes but then turned (she could have gone two more feet before turning and had a great nesting spot), walked all around, leaving a few "turn around spots" with the last one looking a little like it could be a nest, but then she went the longest way possible back to water (going east instead of north). We probed the last area after finishing our walk without finding anything, then decided to remove a layer of sand because the sand was softer in that area. We found the nest-the top of the nest was 18" deep! We left it "in situ", but will need to monitor it closely for hatchlings since it's so far from the water. Janie, Cyndi, Ben, Robbie.

When removing the layer of sand we discovered grass covered by 8 inches of sand. Nest 42 was within feet of Nest 6, another "in situ" nest. This was a perfect spot so we left it. Thanks to Jim & Karen Wolbrink who brought us the supplies while we worked to find the eggs. Robbie & Cyndi White.

Wednesday, July 6th from Betsy Koehler

Nest 54  (tying the 2003 record!!) was found this morning between POA 3 and 4, just below the dune where Nest 50 is located. We moved 99 eggs to a similar dune just south of that. (one egg for DNA research) Judy D. and I were probing in the body pit between ghost crab holes when she reminded me of Marilyn Fleming's rule - look one pace in from where the out tracks leave the body pit. I probed there twice and found the nest!! Marilyn would have been proud of us.

Nest 63  in front of the John Fripp Villas South. The nest was just above the high tide line from last night - very high with the full moon. The eggs were actually laying in water in the nest, which kept caving in while Martha was rescuing the eggs. 78 eggs were relocated to a dryer spot on a dune by POA access #16. (One broken egg for DNA research) We also met a man who was on the beach and watched this Mama do her awesome thing between 3 and 5 this morning. He was tired but happy to tell us about his experience!! Another great Turtle morning. Betsy K, Martha and Dickie.

Monday, July 18th from Betsy Koehler

Nest 65  Between POA 20 and POA 21, there was a well defined body pit with a ghost crab hole near the middle. A wise man standing there said "Ghost crabs don't lie, dig there!". So I dug there and there and there....turns out that today, the ghost crabs DID lie. I finally found the top of the egg chamber on the other side of the body pit, very deep. We left the nest 'in situ'.

Lost due to storm surge of 8/26

Thursday, August 4th - from Cyndi White 8/05

Nest 68  It's ironic that I have to report Nest 68. This nest knocks me out of the lead for the pot, putting Jim Wolbrink in the money. Today's shopping spree with the winnings has been cancelled. Janie found the nest after seeing a huge crab hole in the turn-around area of the false crawl from yesterday. She probed once and hit eggs! One had been broken by the crabs, so we used it for DNA. We had to leave it in situ and hope the high tides won't get it before two weeks go by. Our last nest was on July 18. In the record year from this decade, the last nest was on August 7. Cyndi (just south of POA 2 above the last wrack line)
