Nest 01 & Nest 02 Fripp's first 2 nests were located this
morning; both between POA 5 and POA 6. Both mamas made clear tracks and
body pits, and they chose their nesting areas
well up in the dunes. We left both nests in situ. Nest 1 is a shallow nest, with a broken egg left
on top of the sand,
and another broken egg under the surface; we took both eggs for the DNA
study. Janie Lackman probed to find the eggs in Nest 2; an egg was
taken for the DA study. Team members were:
Janie Lackman, Vicki Leighton and Judy Dayner. Denise, Corey and
Alaina walked with us, and Corey helped carry supplies.

likely from the crabs used for research. 127 eggs were relocated to a

found nest 07 today midpoint between POA 2 & POA 3. The mama turtle
had wandered a bit before digging a very shallow nest. When we arrived,
the body pit had many scattered
broken eggs on top as well as whole eggs.
There was even an egg in the out going track. In all 12 eggs were
broken by ghost crabs. The nest was located by carefully removing the
top layer of sand around the broken eggs - it was a wide and shallow
area with many scattered eggs until we found the main nest chamber
which was only about 6 inches deep. Sheila C. & Rick K. relocated
the remaining 91 eggs to a dune just North of POA 2. 2 of the broken
eggs were used for research.

probed unsuccessfully for almost an hour. Twice we scraped off the top
layer of sand and methodically probed each quadrant. We were ready to
remove the top 6-8 inches in the most likely area, but I continued
probing closer to the incoming tracks and
there it was,
very deep, with well-packed sand filling the top of the egg chamber.

Nest 19 between POA 08 & POA 09 this morning. The mama’s tracks
showed that she was on the beach around low tide (4 am) and she nested
as soon as she hit dry sand. Because the location was in a low area
that will likely be flooded by high tides during incubation, we
relocated the nest to an area just south of POA 4. 126 eggs were
relocated and one taken for DNA database. It was an eventful morning -
this was the first nest for Nickie & Dan Hicks; Sally Work reported
a waterspout near Hunting Island; and right after we finished marking
the nest, we had a heavy downpour. Dick & Sally

Nest 21 &
Nest 22 Both nests were in between POA 26 and POA 27 and were relocated to
south of POA 22. Nest
21 was easily found by Betsy K. who simply followed a ghost crab hole
straight to the chamber, no probing necessary. No eggs were broken.
Nest 21 contained 118 eggs and Nest 22 contained 119 eggs. We took one
from each for DNA. The team actually walked right past Nest 22 because
we were excited to see the long crawl
for Nest 21 ahead.
It was Betsy K. and her professional turtle eyes that spotted the
strange crawl for Nest 22. Nest 22 was apparently made early last night
and what tracks weren’t washed away were running parallel along the
rocks. There were two or three body pits along the rock wall. I found
the nest via probe, no broken eggs. There was actually a large rock
down in the nest chamber which gave it a weird shape. Some guests
watched her lay last night, they said it was at 8pm but by the picture
they sent me it looks like it could have been later; they used a flash.
We were joined on our patrol by

Nest 36 - Lisa called me at about 6:15am to let us know that there was
a turtle on the beach at POA 1. When we arrived she was in the narrow
area of water at POA 1 swimming back and forth and confused about how
to get back to the open ocean. She had quite a crawl last night/this
morning which included taking out the poles
for Nest 31 and climbing the dune that held Nest 7 and taking those
poles out as well.
There was an area of disturbance that looked like a classic body pit
just to the left of Nest 7 - It had little mounds of sand and ghost
crab holes. We watched the turtle until about 7am and then Lisa took
over the watch while the rest of us finished the walk. The turtle finally made it out to sea
and we came back to locate her nest. After about an hour of probing and
removing sand, we still had not been able to locate the nest. Lisa was
putting our existing nests together and found the tape from Nest 7
buried under the sand near the actual nest spot. We had already
examined this area and did not see enough moved sand although there was
broken vegetation. Once Lisa found the buried tape, we carefully probed
closer to Nest 7 and quickly located the nest - it was less than 2 feet
from Nest 7. Nest 36 was left in situ with one egg taken for research. Congratulations to Bob J. & Carlene R.

Nest 39 south of POA 19 and relocated it north of POA 20. There
were two body pits. 141 eggs were relocated, in addition to one taken
for research. The nest was unusual, with a ridge on one side and no
scooped out area on the opposite side; this is the same pattern as nest
30, which was only 7 days ago, found on Tuesday just south of Rock
Beauty. Could this be the same mom nesting again? Merilyn and Calvin’s

Nest 41 was found at POA 23. We relocated 82 eggs at the same location,

windblown, so we were lucky to find it without too much probing. This is what the nest looked like before
probing (except for about 6 probes).
The tracks were blown away. There was a crab hole, some dog tracks, and
a small mound behind the crab holes. We probed the crab hole, but the
nest was in the small mound, left from her flippers. Karen & Tony Natoli, Linda Urbanski, Kathy

Nest 62 was laid by a mama turtle who was
still on the beach when we got there!
She has a metal tag on her front left flipper, so it will be
interesting to see when and where she was tagged if Janie is able to
get that info after reporting the code to DNR. A flipper on her right
side was a little short and stumpy, which may have made it difficult
for her to nest... she made FOUR body pits,
with her eggs being in the last one. She was clearly on the beach for a
LONG time;
judging by her crawl I would guess 4 to 5 hours! Sheila C. found that

Nest 77 (a wild nest) Today as our team walked south, a family told us there was a hatchling on the beach, with tracks coming from near the rocks just north of POA 26. Someone had written TURTLE NEST and an arrow in the sand. A second hatchling was found digging out of the sand halfway down the beach. Both babies scurried to the sea. Kelsey dug where the second hatchling was found, but she found neither an egg shell nor any additional eggs. We don’t know how the second hatchling got buried, unless it fell into a hole or a ghost crab moved it. Lucky baby!
We found many hatchling tracks coming from a hole near the rocks, and a woman said she watched hatchlings emerge that morning.
We left the wild nest intact, and we set up poles and orange tape for Nest
77. We returned later with boards to prevent future hatchlings from falling in the holes between the rocks.
