Saturday, May 23 from Vanessa Penaherrera
Nest 18 Sited just south of POA 19, the young mama's tracks were partly washed out due to the heavy rain. There was almost no differential in the tracks, she had at least 2-3 areas of likely body pits, and she wandered around the beach a ways. After a bit of fruitless probing, we went down to POA 23 to take care of that nest and afterward, we returned to POA 19 to investigate further. Persistence and our good luck charm, Pebbles, paid off and we found the nest after a lengthy round of probing! We're guessing she was a young, inexperienced mama, as 6 eggs were broken while she hid her nest and her tracks were fairly narrow. We used one of those eggs for the research vial. Whew! (we also found a beach Barbie nearby, so we had a little fun with her). The morning after the intense overnight lightening, thunder and rain brought 3 mamas onshore to nest in Zone 2A. Many thanks to Dan for bringing 3 rounds of supplies and hanging in there while we worked the nests.

Nest PN01 A very different crawl just south of POA 28. Called DNR, sent photos and it's most likely a Leatherback nest. That's the good news, the bad news is after many hours, we weren't able to locate the nest. It has been enclosed with 4 poles, to preserve the whole site. It's marked PN01 (possible nest) and if in 55 days or so, there are signs of hatching, it will get the next available number at that time. We know it's a nest, because the differential in track was substantial and she didn't wander. There was also thrown sand, but Leatherbacks are large animals and their nests are much deeper then Loggerheads, and harder to locate the nest chamber as a result. Anyway, time will tell, hopefully the nest will do well and we will witness some little Leatherback's on Fripp Island. Karen Natoli

Nest 57 just north of POA 28 presented with a few challenges and questions. The track differential was not much longer than an hour, 2 at best, in her quest for nest site, she had hit the rocks, crawled over a dune, made a few turns, tore up the dune and grasses and totally ran over nest 39's marker and enclosure. It appeared she had dug and might have nested right alongside the previous nest, to the side, or possible not at all due to brief visit. The area was thoroughly examined, only area that had a body pit area to the side of a rock, significant torn vegetation and some thrown sand had potential. The stick marking the center of nest 39 was still intact, and far enough away, I felt secure that there would be no damage or confusion with previous nest chamber. Chamber was located, one egg taken for DNA research and nest was left in situ.

It truly was a team effort, as Dave's probe located the nest and Donna dug up the 110 eggs while he dug a new nest. While she sacrificed an egg for the DNA analysis, Dave relocated the eggs in the new nest. Team Pickens, Heather and Rob, brought supplies pronto, and their help was much appreciated. We enjoyed the company of the Pickens family, new Fripp residents, as they observed all the activity while maintaining Covid-19 protocol. Nest 77 was located right next to the POA 16 access walkway so there were many footsteps over her tracks entering the area. It took a while, but I finally located the chamber. At first I thought it was an old crab hole because it took a pretty good detour about 8-10 inches down but the sand was still soft so just followed the soft sand to the chamber. These ladies are getting very sly, and certainly having fun with the wrack. 1 egg taken for DNA, nest left in situ.

Nest 81 Walking zone 1a for my cool chic friend Pebbles this morning, I had an unusual nest. It is located directly in front of POA 6 but down in the sand bar. Everyone that is familiar with the beach knows this seems like a country mile from everywhere.  Just a little above where she dropped her eggs (93 of them) , there is dry sand and dunes that may keep them dry. So Karen dug a hole for me and I relocated the eggs and now it will be a watch and pray that they will be protected and make it back to the ocean.

Nest 83 Grateful to fill in for Katherine this morning and patrol Zone 1B. The odds were in my favor as momma 83 chose a lovely spot in the dunes south of POA 13. Nest chamber was found right at the top/seaward aspect of the dune and was left in situ, with a single egg taken for DNA sample. Momma was probably as pleased with herself, as I was with her choice spot, the hatchlings will have a direct path down a dune "staircase" right toward the ocean during later tides. Nest 131 at POA 24n. Saw the tracks and followed them up to the body pit. Gayla hadn't had any activity on her stretch and offered to help. As I started probing a couple of areas that looked like a body pits, a little guy about 8 asked if he could help. I said sure from a "social distance" and then I explained what I was doing and why and he surveyed the area from a distance. Then, he pointed to a little area and said "I bet the nest is there". Sure enough this little turtle whistler was right. I probed and immediately found the spot. He watched the whole process from the initial dig to the movement of the eggs. Gayla and I .debated but decided the initial nest would be in danger in the higher tides. Gayla dug the hole for the eggs as I counted with Wyatt's help (he was still at a distance from me). Moved the eggs to the new site, relocated the eggs and covered the hole. Barb Anton came to bring supplies and we had Wyatt hand me supplies piece by piece.
